The Future of Maritime Traffic Management: insights on the PIONEERS’ demo on Vessel Traffic Optimisation

Curious about the future of maritime traffic in ports?

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges and Macomi’s simulation solution, PortGenie, are developing a Vessel Traffic Optimization demonstrator as part of the PIONEERS project to explore these very questions.

Vessels often face extended waiting times both in port and when approaching it, leading to unnecessary emissions, increased costs, potential safety concerns, and decreased overall port efficiency. To address these issues, PIONEERS is developing advanced technologies to enhance port operations by reducing ship waiting times and improving traffic control in congested port areas.

PIONEERS efforts focus on two key technologies: Optimal Lock Planning and a Decision Support System (DSS). By leveraging business rules and AIS data, is possible to simulate realistic vessel movements and interactions, providing highly detailed insights into waterways navigation and optimizing berth and lock planning. Watch the simulation video here.

Recently, Macomi and PoAB made significant steps in improving lockage scheduling within PortGenie. The new algorithm, utilizing Simulated Annealing, pushes the boundaries of optimizing this critical resource, harmonizing it with the entire vessel planning process. The results demonstrate that it is possible to reduce the number of lockages and improve vessel performance while keeping runtimes at a comparable level. Looking ahead, it is planned to add more features, including optimization for water loss during lockages.
