PIONEERS reaches a new milestone with the launch of demo on Inland Automated Vessels Technology
PIONEERS is excited to announce a new milestone reached in our mission to make Green Ports the future norm! On 25 June 2024, SEAFAR presented the latest advancements in automated sailing technology, marking a significant step forward in sustainable waterborne innovation.
In collaboration with imec, SEAFAR, Port of Antwerp-Bruges, University of Antwerp and Danser, the PIONEERS partners are exploring the potential of remotely operated automated vessels. These vessels provide an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional transportation methods, enhancing both safety and efficiency in port operations.
“AI-enabled tools are revolutionising maritime safety and reducing the environmental impact of port activities through digital transformation,” says Ghazaleh Kia, R&D Project Manager at SEAFAR.
The automated vessels are managed from a Remote Operation Centre, where a single captain can supervise multiple vessels. This setup, utilising Artificial Intelligence, enhances observation and decision-making processes, significantly increasing safety and operational efficiency. AI specifically contributes by providing real-time data analytics and predictive maintenance, which help prevent accidents and optimise route planning.
Through the digitalisation of inland navigation, PIONEERS is optimising remote operations, enhancing the competitiveness of waterborne transport. This technology makes operations more adaptable and efficient.
A key benefit of this innovation is the reduction of the environmental impact of port activities, promoting green ports and sustainable transportation solutions.
During the launch event, participants had the opportunity to engage in an immersive VR experience. This 360° tour of the operational barge and control centre provided a firsthand look at the future of automated sailing technology. We also demonstrated SEAFAR’s AI-powered automated sailing capabilities, object detection solutions based on neural networks for enhanced situational awareness, IMEC and the University of Antwerp’s innovative sensor fusion technology, and our Autonomous Shipping Simulator.
