On September 19 2023, PIONEERS held a workshop at the Antwerp Euroterminal NV (AET), Europe’s largest multipurpose terminal. The event brought together several consortium partners and external organizations, including Air Plus Renewables, Aspiravi, Univers, and Atlas Copco, to explore innovative solutions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint in the maritime sector.
The workshop was not merely a brainstorming session; it was a practical effort to identify and address both technological and non-technological barriers that might arise during real-world implementation of the demonstration. Participants worked collaboratively to devise mitigation strategies, ensuring a seamless transition from the planning phase to the demonstration phase.
One of the highlights of this endeavour is the management of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at AET. These cutting-edge batteries will be overseen by the Univers Energy Management System (EMS), playing a pivotal role in harnessing renewable energy sources and lowering the carbon footprint at the terminal.
A significant aspect of the PIONEERS project is the identification and mitigation of barriers throughout the implementation process. This includes planning the transfer of demonstration(s) components. The initial steps involve organizing both physical and online workshops for each demonstration, enabling a comprehensive root cause analysis. These workshops will refine the initial barriers, categorizing them based on factors such as controllability, time frame, and scope.
In the coming weeks, PIONEERS is set to continue hosting workshops for other working groups, addressing crucial aspects of their green innovative demonstrations.
