PIONEERS at the Maritime Decarbonization by Enabling Key Technology Symbiosis Seminar 2024

The World Maritime University (WMU) hosted the “Maritime Decarbonization by Enabling Key Technology Symbiosis” seminar from 16-17 May 2024, in Malmö, Sweden. The event was dedicated to discussing and promoting green technologies to pave the way for sustainable maritime decarbonization.

On the second day, the seminar focused on the role of ports in the energy transition, under the theme “Ports as Energy Hubs: Opportunity and Challenges”. This session, part of the SEANERGY project activities, aimed to gather feedback from relevant port cluster stakeholders to guide EU ports and policy-making towards the decarbonisation of the shipping sector.

PIONEERS and its sister project, MAGPIE, were invited to speak at this session. Wouter Schmidt from the University of Antwerp presented the PIONEERS project, highlighting the importance of ports in providing and producing green energy. While the core of the conference was the discussion on the greening of ships, ports play a crucial role in the energy transition. Wouter introduced the technological innovations of PIONEERS and emphasized the critical role of addressing non-technological barriers to achieve these technical solutions.

The event gathered officials from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the EU, supported by the Horizon 2020 EU-funded project CHEK. The CHEK project is dedicated to decarbonizing shipping by enabling key technology symbiosis in real vessel concept designs, aiming to reduce the environmental impact of the shipping industry through alternative ship designs.

The two-day seminar was a great opportunity for industry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to exchange ideas and strategies for a greener maritime future.
