PIONEERS at Flemish Port Day 2023

PIONEERS presents an innovative demo on local resource recovery for green and circular concrete at Flemish Port Open Day

On May 7th, 2023, the Flemish ports of Antwerp-Bruges, Ostend and Ghent opened their doors to the public for the sixth time. The Flemish Government, a partner of the PIONEERS project, organised the event.

PIONEERS partners VITO and Buildwise, presented the demo on local resource recovery for green and circular concrete under the Sustainable Port Design pillar at the innovation hub on the left bank of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The demo showcased an innovative approach to producing circular concrete for, e.g., new quays and terminals around the Canal Dock zone. This approach has several benefits by partially using sand aggregate in concrete, including reduced environmental impact and local reclamation and reuse. Additionally, fine sand is used instead of coarse sand, which makes it a unique and innovative method.

The PIONEERS project is committed to promoting sustainability in the port sector through innovative solutions. This demo is a prime example of the project’s focus on sustainable and circular port design and construction approaches. Visitors to the Flemish Port Open Day had the opportunity to learn about this exciting demo and see first hand how the PIONEERS project is making a difference in the port sector.
