PIONEERS 3rd General Assembly

PIONEERS 3rd General Assembly

PIONEERS consortium partners recently gathered for the 3rd General Assembly of the project, held on 12-13 June 2024. Hosted by the Municipality and Port of Venlo in the Netherlands, in the beautiful circular and cradle-to-cradle City Hall, nearly 70 participants from across Europe came together to discuss innovative steps towards sustainability in European ports.

We were warmly welcomed by Vera Tax, Member of the European Parliament, and Antoin Scholten, Mayor of Venlo. Their opening remarks sparked conversations on the EU Green Deal, TEN-T regulations, and Venlo’s sustainability journey. Following this, we delved into the state of the project, with presentations on the progress of 19 demonstrations, the development of the Green Port Master Plan, and overall recent achievements and next steps.

The first day concluded with a bus excursion to the Port of Venlo and a visit to our partner, Supply Chain Valley, the largest inland rail terminal in the Netherlands.

The second day featured two dynamic breakout sessions, where participants explored topics such as ports’ carbon emissions and its monitoring, co-transferabilty, and impact monitoring of technological solutions. Additionally, we tackled common barriers to innovation, both technical and non-technical.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Peter Van Wijlick and his team for their flawless organisation, hospitable welcome, and nice introduction to all that Venlo has to offer. We also thank all participants for their invaluable contributions. These two days were filled with knowledge sharing, inspiration, and a collective commitment to pioneering a greener future for the maritime industry.

Together, we are shaping the Green Ports of the Future, driving innovation and progress towards a sustainable future for European ports.
