To address this environmental concern, PIONEERS is taking new steps towards cleaner and zero-emission solutions through the electric green last mile (eGLM).   PIONEERS consortium partners FIER and Venlo aim to introduce 100% electric terminal tractors to contribute to the further upscaling of the electrification of logistical operations and its supporting infrastructure.   For more details about this demo, such as the methodology and expected outcomes, you can download the factsheet. However, PIONEERS is exploring an innovative alternative and local way that eventually creates a business model for other building projects.   PIONEERS consortium partners VITO, Buildwise and Port of Antwerp-Bruges aim to replace up to 40% of the original sand in the concrete with local “upcycled sand” excavated during construction of the tidal dock. This sustainable process will be tested under real conditions, exposed to tides and salty water.   For more details about this demo, such as the methodology and expected outcomes, you can download the factsheet. As a matter of fact, these cars require an initial charging operation before any further shipment.   PIONEERS consortium partners AET and Univers are working together to create a system where the management and storage of electricity can effectively benefit such terminal operations, becoming more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Currently, they are exploring eco-friendly energy from sources such as wind turbines, to make the most of the green energy.   For more details about this demo, such as the main objectives and the economic potential, you can download the factsheet. This involves storing electricity in large containers called ZESpacks to power the barges. The ZESpacks use advanced lithium-ion battery technology. When the batteries in these containers run out of power, they are swapped for fully charged ones at special docking stations in a defined network. This allows the barges to keep sailing without waiting and emitting harmful pollutants.   The goal is to investigate if using battery-powered barges and building modular docking stations is a practical option for a sustainable inland shipping.   For more details about this demo, such as the methodology behind it and the routes where this concept is being studied, you can...

This demo presents a technical challenge as these machines require a high-speed swift refuelling to sustain uninterrupted operations. If successful, it will contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future for port operations.   For more details about this demo, such as the methodology behind it as well as the main expected results, you can download the factsheet. Peter van Wijlick, one of PIONEERS' partners from the Municipality of Venlo, attended the event. Venlo is the only inland port within PIONEERS, so his participation was of great importance to exchange ideas and join discussions on sustainable growth and development within the inland port sector.   On Thursday afternoon, a workshop was held on the challenges posed by low water levels in rivers and canals during dry seasons. The workshop explored topics such as integrated river management and building climate-resilient waterways, vital for sustainable inland port operations. In the evening, the NVB hold its annual dinner, providing an opportunity for participants to engage in informal...

PIONEERS “Breaking down the Barriers” workshop

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] PIONEERS "Breaking down the Barriers" workshop [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]On September 19 2023, PIONEERS held a workshop at the Antwerp Euroterminal NV (AET), Europe's largest multipurpose terminal. The event brought together several consortium partners and external organizations, including Air Plus Renewables, Aspiravi, Univers, and Atlas Copco, to explore innovative solutions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint in the maritime sector.   The workshop was not merely a brainstorming session; it was a practical effort to identify and address both technological and non-technological barriers that might arise during real-world implementation of the demonstration. Participants worked collaboratively to devise mitigation strategies, ensuring a seamless transition from the planning phase to the demonstration phase.   One of the highlights of this endeavour is the management of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at AET. These cutting-edge batteries will be overseen by the Univers Energy Management System (EMS), playing a pivotal role in harnessing renewable energy sources and lowering the carbon footprint at...
