Building a new tidal dock requires several different materials, including sand, which is usually imported. However, PIONEERS is exploring an innovative alternative and local way that eventually creates a business model for other building projects.

PIONEERS consortium partners VITO, Buildwise and Port of Antwerp-Bruges aim to replace up to 40% of the original sand in the concrete with local “upcycled sand” excavated during construction of the tidal dock. This sustainable process will be tested under real conditions, exposed to tides and salty water.
