Kick-off meeting for T4.4 on the Corridor of Modular Docking Stations for Energy Containers demo

On November 30, 2022, ZES (Zero Emission Services), PIONEERS partner, hosted the kick-off meeting for T4.4 on the Corridor of Modular Docking Stations for Energy Containers Demonstrator, with all the contributing partners, ECT (Hutchison Ports Venlo), TCT (Hutchison Ports Belgium), Danser, Gemeente Venlo, University Maastricht and PoAB (Port of Antwerp-Bruges).

The purpose of the meeting was to validate the scope, time plan and roles for the demo under the Pillar Clean Energy Production, Storage and Supply. The main goal is a feasibility study of the location of modular docking stations at the Antwerp-Willebroek-Venlo corridor.

ZES offers a new energy system to make inland shipping more sustainable: a complete product and services package for emission-free sailing based on exchangeable battery containers with green electricity, charging stations, technical support, and an innovative payment concept for barge owners.

The meeting ended with a visit to the docking station Alpherium terminal in Alphen aan de Rijn, with a tour by ZES operations manager Mike Driehuys and project manager Esther Poortstra. In this terminal, ZES has its first docking station operational. The Alphenaar sails daily electrically between Alphen ad Rijn and Moerdijk using 2 ZESpacks for a roundtrip.

ZES provides exchangeable energy containers for new and existing inland barges. These containers – ZESpacks – are charged with green electricity. Once depleted, the skippers can quickly exchange the containers for a fully charged one at one of the exchange and charging stations.

It was a very fruitful meeting, and all partners are committed to making this a success!
