Container terminals are significant emitters of greenhouse gases, mainly due to the operation of straddle carriers that run on diesel fuel.
To address this environmental challenge, PSA Antwerp, a partner in the PIONEERS consortium, is investigating the feasibility of using hydrogen as an alternative fuel for straddle carriers in order to reduce emissions in daily terminal operations. This initiative has already resulted in a fully operational hydrogen system and a remarkable reduction in diesel usage by over 35% with the launch in 2023 of the world’s first hydrogen dual-fuel straddle carrier in the Port of Antwerp-Bruges which will continue to be tested for performance in live operations.
