To reduce emissions from barges, a comprehensive approach involving new technology, a change in mindset, and updated policies is crucial.
One possible solution being studied by PIONEERS consortium partner ZES is battery-electric sailing. This involves storing electricity in large containers called ZESpacks to power the barges. The ZESpacks use advanced lithium-ion battery technology. When the batteries in these containers run out of power, they are swapped for fully charged ones at special docking stations in a defined network. This allows the barges to keep sailing without waiting and emitting harmful pollutants.
The goal is to investigate if using battery-powered barges and building modular docking stations is a practical option for a sustainable inland shipping.
