Innovation thrives on collaboration, and at PIONEERS Ideathons, we want to bring together the brightest minds to tackle the most pressing challenges in reducing ports’ environmental impact while remaining competitive and offering added value in a sustainable global trade ecosystem. Join us to co-create solutions, exchange ideas, and drive real change in the maritime sector.
We invite students to brainstorm and pitch groundbreaking ideas that can increase the pace towards green port logistics, energy efficiency, multimodal transport, and digitalization. Each Ideathon focuses on a specific port challenge and provides a collaborative environment where participants can develop actionable solutions with the support of mentors, industry leaders, and technology experts.

PORT OF ANTWERP-BRUGES
Join the Port of Antwerp-Bruges Ideathon and Shape the Future of Smart Ports!

THE CHALLENGE
The time for greening is now. We have less than 26 years to achieve carbon neutrality, and the investment decisions that will determine success or failure are being made right now. Ports are large ecosystems that can have a significant impact on the greening of Europe. If we don’t achieve the 2050 climate-neutrality goals, European ports might not only lose their license to operate (because of changing norms around sustainability), but core business operations of ports could become impossible due to extreme weather disrupting operations, water shortages in docks, carbon border taxes affecting competitiveness etc.
But here’s the plot twist:
The discourse is shifting. European ports face intensifying competition from Asian ports that are already massively investing in green technology and infrastructure. Economically challenging times and lack of European competitiveness are making companies abandon sustainability goals, while the European Commission is revisiting Green Deal commitments —all the while climate effects become more visible each year.
YOUR MISSION
European ports face an existential crossroads: lead the green transition now, or risk losing their license to operate by 2050. Yet as economic pressures mount, sustainability commitment is wavering just when we need it most. We all know that innovation is virtually impossible without the innovators and early adopters leading the way. Your mission: come up with as many ideas possible that turn sustainability laggards into green evangelists and transform economic pressure into innovation fuel.
This challenge consists of several subchallenges that you will be able to add to, choose from and/or combine during the ideathon.
How might we identify influential stakeholders?
How might we make influential stakeholders step up?
How might we reframe sustainability from compliance burden to innovation opportunity and even competitive advantage?
How might we connect the right mix of stakeholders who can amplify each other’s influence? How might we create urgency for action now, while economic pressures push for delay?
How might we enable all ports to participate despite limited resources?
WHY JOIN?
Because your ideas can make waves. The best ideas will be shared with the PIONEERS consortium (47 partners across Europe, including the Ports of Antwerp-Bruges, Barcelona, Constanta & Venlo). Your solutions could therefore directly influence real green transition strategies. As an extra incentive the winning team will receive tickets for the 2026 edition of SuperNova, the ultimate tech & innovation festival from 22 to 28 March at Waagnatie in Antwerp.

All motivated students that believe that they are the generation that will solve wicked problems such as this one. Motivation beats study domain. We are expecting students in a wide range of disciplines, such as sustainability and environmental studies, innovation studies, economics, logistics, maritime studies, sociology, psychology, behavioural studies etc.
PORT OF BARCELONA
Join the Port of Barcelona Ideathon and Shape the Future of Smart Ports!
WHEN: May 14, 2025
On May 14, 2025, the Ideathon at the Port of Barcelona has officially kicked off with a successful and engaging information session. Out of 27 registered applicants, 15 participants joined on-site, creating a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere.
The session began with a maritime tour of the port’s facilities, offering participants a first-hand look at port operations, infrastructure, and daily logistics. This immersive experience provided valuable context for the real-world challenges they will be addressing throughout the Ideathon.
PORT OF CONSTANTA
Join the Port of Constanta Ideathon and Shape the Future of Smart Ports!
WHEN: September 19-20, 2025
On September 19–20, brilliant students from Universitatea OVIDIUS din Constanța took on Port of Constanța challenge, bringing fresh, forward-thinking ideas to one of Europe’s most strategic hubs. Their creativity, teamwork, and drive were nothing short of exceptional.The first day of the event was dedicated to an information session for students and mentors regarding the Constanta Port, the PIONEERS project, the ideathon concept and the presentation of the challenge that constitutes the theme of the Ideathon. On the second day, students grouped in 5 teams worked together to identify solutions for the Ideathon challenge: concept of an AI system with focus on collaboration, communication and awareness.
PORT OF VENLO
Join the Port of Venlo Ideathon and Shape the Future of Smart Ports!
WHEN: June 16-17, 2025
The Port of Venlo Ideathon, held on June 16–17 and organized by BISCI in collaboration with Gemeente Venlo, brought together 61 Business Engineering students from Maastricht University to explore climate-neutral solutions for 2050. Following site visits to key logistics hubs, teams developed innovative proposals addressing regional sustainability challenges. Team 10 won the competition with a standout concept featuring shared green fleets, eco-incentives, and a dedicated sustainability board.
